![]() Orange County |
Located just south of Los Angeles, Orange County is located on over 42 miles of the Pacific Coast. Often called the Gold Coast of California, Orange County is the site of some of the world's most popular tourist attractions, including Disneyland. The county's earliest settlement, Mission San Juan Capistrano, was founded in 1776. The mission eventually added commerce, trading locally prepared hides and tallow for books, furniture and other supplies from the East Coast. The first cities—Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Orange— incorporated between 1876 and 1888. Orange County experiences a Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm with mild winters. The Santa Ana winds, heated as the air is forced down the mountain slopes towards the Pacific coast, frequently result in hot days for residents of Orange County in late autumn and early winter. Being southern California, earthquakes are always a possibility. Orange County is home to baseball's Anaheim Angels and hockey's Anaheim Ducks. Los Alamitos Race Course is the site of horse racing in the county.
